Do you know Montenegro? Ten reasons for a (first) discovery journey! (Podgorica - Montenegro)

Do you know Montenegro? Ten reasons for a (first) discovery journey!

Cultural diversity, cliffy peaks, wide beaches, cosmopolitansim and hospitality belong to Montenegro as well as the first Best Western Hotel of the country.

Only 176 km lie between the most western and eastern point of Montenegro, only  200 km is the distance between the northern and southern end. But these keep many surprises ready: deep gorges, impressive peaks, spectacular canyons, unique national parks, adorable bays and countless beaches. And all this is surrounded by the crystal-clear sea and illuminated by the Mediterranean sun.
Montenegro has so many superlatives and insiders’ tips, that it would be almost impossible to list all. Therefore ten have to suffice, but these are reasons enough, in order to awake longing for the „jewel at the Adriatic Sea“!

1. Dreamy beaches and crystal-clear water
Montenegro has 117 beaches with a length of 73 km. These offers wunderful views onto the sea, are hidden in bays, wild, isolated, only reachable by boat, near to quaint seaports, olive groves or pinewoods. With a bathing season of 180 days and a water temperature of up to 27,4 degrees, the Montenegrin Mediterranean is a paradise par excellence for swimmers and plungers

2. Architectural highlights in the fjord
Nowhere else in Montenegro steep rock faces and the green glittering Adriatic Sea directly meet as in the Bay of Kotor – the only fjord in Southern Europe. At its south-eastern end the little town of Kotor let the visitors plunge into medieval times. The Old Town with the dense accumulation of palaces, churches, little squares, angular lanes and the centuries-old city wall was declared as World Heritage Site in 1979.

3. Budva – thick stonewalls and endless bathing pleasure
The oldest town at the Montenegrin coast is situated, with its historic Old Town (stari grad) and the meters thick city wall, on a little peninsula and is known as „pearl of Montenegro“. The 270 days of sun per year and the wonderful sandy beaches let become the town one of the most popular bathing resorts, where you can perfectly stroll, especially after sunset.

4. Lake Skadarsko Jezero – Paradise for bird lovers and fishers
In the back-country of the Adriatic coast the unique Lake Skadarsko Jezero – the biggest lake on the Balkan and one of the last freshwater marshs in the Mediterranean area- waits with an amazing diversity of fishes and birds. There the unique free living pelicans in Europe can be found.

5. Culinary delectabilities
The cuisine of the country presents itself as diversified as the scenery of Montenegro and uses the rich and original fundus of nature.
The ever-lasting Venetian influence also left its culinary tracks in the whole country.
Coastal light Mediterranean dishes with fish (ribe) or seafood - na žaru (grilled), lešo (boiled) or as brodet (hotpot) dominate, whereas solid plain fare is on the menu in the mountains.

6. Cetinje – capital of arts with old embassies
The historic capital Cetinje, located in the Lovcen mountains, gained in enormous international importance with the acceptance of Montenegro as sovereign state in the year 1878. The former European Great Powers built embassies, which impressively influence the townscape since up today. The biannual festival of Centinje, originated in 1991, ties up to the cultural fame of the town and supports the cultural exchange between Western and Eastern Europe.

7. Durmitor Nacionalni park – untouched nature in the height of more than 2.000 meters
