On the one hand it is the the main route towards West Asia, on the other hand there are the axles to the Danube, Aegean and Adriatic Sea, which made Niš all times an important strategic spot at the connecting line from West to East. Alone due to the location at the important arterial road of the Balkan, Niš is the economic and cultural center of South Serbia. Already the Romans had discovered the geographically interesting position very fast and founded a castrum for military purposes. The birth of the later Roman Emperor “Constantine the Great“ put Niš on the map and anchored it in the history books. Niš – Vibrant and ambitious Today Niš counts, after Belgrade and Novi Sad, among the biggest cities of the country and looks back on a turbulent history, which left it’s marks in many places. As whole Serbia, Niš had to face up to many trials due to the difficult economic and political circumstances and also these days it feels the economic depressions. In spite of all problems Niš is a very vibrant city and not only due to the resident university with the appropriate students it is characterized by an intensive nightlife and much music. The annual Jazz Festival, the Niš Music Festival and many parades belong to fix elements of the event calendar. Further several fairs and young branch offices make the city increasingly interesting. Niš spreads on both banks of the river Nišava. The Oslobodenja square is the heart of the city, in the background the Fortress is located. There some objects from the Turkish period are preserved, like the mosque, parts of the Turkish steam bath and the arsenal. The big pedestrian zone is diveded by the Boulevard Generala Milojka Lesjanina, which is lined with some historic buildings like the seat of the symphony orchestra and the National museum. On the tracks of Romans and Byzantium In the past decades further archeologies of the Roman and Byzantine period were discovered during excavations. These can be gazed both in the district Jagodina Mala and in the former Roman suburb Niš Mediana, an antique historical site with a witness of imperial wealth and glory. Ten km from Niš, the spa Niška Banja is located. It was first mentioned centuries ago and with the remains and traces of antique and early Byzantium period it has been keeping its tradition and uniqueness. With its healing thermal springs, pleasant climate and excellent medical treatments the health resort promises pure relaxation. Local Tourism Portal of Niš |
