The High Tatras The town Vysoké Tatry is, with a total area of 398 km2, one of the biggest cities in Slovakia. It covers the main part of the homonymous mountains and forms 15 districts, originally single settlements, which were integrated step by step in an area complex. The administrative center is Starý Smokovec, which is, together with Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso, one of the most important tourism centres of the High Tatras. Holidays in the High Tatras – pure recovery The climate of the high mountains and its healthy effects were the main reasons for the formation of the settlements and so doing, also Tatranská Lomnica was an interesting recovery center for all times. The commune is directly located at the Lomnický štít, one of the biggest mountains of the Tatra. The cable railway transports visitors, after an almost vertical hover through the cliffs, in the height of 2.632 meters. From there, a fantastic panorama of the worldwide smallest high mountains and the protected national park is offered. This presents, during the whole year, endless possibilities for athletes, families and people looking for recreation of all ages. Besides mountain climbing, riding or swimming in the summer, the Upper Tatra is a real paradise for all lovers of the frosty season. There are perfect snow conditions for almost six months with a lot of space for (cross-country) skiing, winter walking-tours, sledging or sleigh rides. In spring, the first mountain hikes lure with a terrific view of the snow covered peaks and the greening plateaus with their unique alpine flora.
Excursions in the High Tatras Many further attractions wait in the surrounding areas with the two regions Liptov and Zips. There dreamy castles, romantic towns, open-air museums, relaxing spas and plenty of glacial and stalactite caves can be discovered.
